The Quality: Not as Good as Before

The pandemic caused a lot of problems, not only on our health but also on the quality of education. During this pandemic we do not have a physical class but we do have an online and modular class. It is great because despite of Covid19 pandemic, DepEd makes ways for us to continue our study by different learning methods. I know that their intention was good because they do not want us to be left behind in the field of education and the question is, “Is the quality of education good?” I think it is not as good as before.

We can’t change the fact that not all students, even teachers are able to keep up with the new strategies of learning. The number of enrollees during this pandemic is lower than the number of enrollees before pandemic. In school year 2019-2020 the estimated number of enrollees was 27 million while in S.Y 2020-2021 there are only more than 20 million and now 2021-2022 the number of students who signed up as of September 15 was 26,308,875. Based on the data, we see that the number of enrollees now are higher than the last school year (2020-2021) but less than the school year where there is still a physical class.

We are all aware that students have different learning capability and it is sad to say that not all students are able to understand the lesson stated in the modules. Then, there are times that we need a further discussion or research about a certain topic because we want to know more and the meaning and examples in the modules are not enough to make us understand the lesson. It is like the lesson that we can learn in modular learning is limited while in physical class is limitless. The down part of it is some students are only answering their modules for the sake of good grades not for the knowledge or lessons. Let us all remember, that education is not all about the grades, scores you got in tests and quizzes or your rank in school. Education is all about the lessons you have learned, the knowledge that you gained and the experiences that will mold you to be a better and knowledgeable person in the future.

My main point here is in this time of pandemic not all students/children are learning, because some of them are not enrolled and a part of them are just passing their answers even if they did not understand the concept or lesson. We should improve the quality of education. Let us all remember the main purpose of education and that is to educate people.

  1. I agree that what DepEd has done to keep our education ongoing throughout this pandemic has been a good approach, since I believe that nothing can stop us from learning. However, in today's situation, a lot of Filipino children are not getting quality education since they are unable to keep up with today's learning methods. I only hope that this pandemic will be over soon so that all students can get quality education.
