According to Damaso King, a well-known Vigan historian, the Viva Vigan Binatbatan Festival of the Arts, which runs from the last week of April to the first week of May, was originally the Feast of the Natives, which began on May 3, 1883. 

Binatbatan Festival has its origins in Vigan's abel weaving business, which existed long before the Spaniards arrived to colonize the Philippines. It comes from the word batbat, which refers to a pair of bamboo sticks used to remove cotton pods from kapas sanglay trees. In Ilocano, the word "kapas" (from kapas sanglay) signifies "cotton."

There's a lot of activities during the said festival like street pageantry of the Binatbatan Street Dancing, it also emphasises Agriculture with its Karbo festival, Calesa Parade and the Santacruzan.

Then, a pandemic came and changed our lives. Due to the health protocols we aren't able to celebrate the event. That was blue but it's for the safety of everyone. 


Don't be sad because the long wait is over. I am happy to inform you that this year we were able to celebrate the Binatbatan festival. We can see the Binatbatan Festival street dancers wave their "batbat," some copying the way abel-weavers separate cottons as they gracefully perform the procedure artistically to the beat of drums and lyres rolling through Vigan's historical city's old streets. 


To sum everything up, Binatbatan Festival brings colour and joy to people's faces. So what are you waiting for? Come and join us in celebrating this event.

The Quality: Not as Good as Before
