On Independence Day, national heroes' sacrifices are commemorated, the country's sovereignty is respected, citizens are instilled with nationalism, and the culture and tradition of the people are celebrated. General Emilio Aguinaldo raised the Philippine flag for the first time on that day in 1898, after issuing a decree declaring the day as a proclamation of independence. The sun represents liberty, and the eight rays reflect the original provinces that revolted against Spain on the Philippine flag. It comes from the word batbat, which refers to a pair of bamboo sticks used to remove cotton pods from kapas sanglay trees.
